The First MHB

The Origins: Back to 3rd Grade

What is the Mini Handy Buddy?

Mini Handy Buddy is a compact handheld device that combines a mini electric vacuum/blower, a rubbery eraser, a pencil sharpener, and a storage unit. It is excellent for school-aged kids. That helps them organize and maintain a clean workspace. We believe that every young kid can benefit from the mini handy buddy! The Mini Handy Buddy has been granted a patent after five years of dedicated research, design, and countless modifications.

This page contains what I presented at a science fair as a third grader at West School in New Canaan, CT.

The Problem

  • When I clean eraser bits up, it smudges and sticks on the table
  • It makes a mess on the floor.
  • It takes time to clean.
  • When blown, it can get into others’ space
  • When wiped, it stays on the hands
  • When not cleaned, it makes a mess on the table/paper
  • It rolls and is hard to swipe when it is sticky
  • It gets broken up into more pieces
  • It covers up small writing

History

  • The Vacuum Cleaner was invented by Hubert Cecil Booth in 1901
  • It was developed from a carpet sweeper to an iRobot
  • It started in 1800s by Daniel Hess
  • The British developed most of the vacuum cleaners
  • In 1908, Hoover purchased John Murray Spangler’s patent for the upright
  • vacuum cleaner, as the Hoover vacuum cleaner
  • In 1969, self-propeled vacuum cleaners were made
  • In 2002, Helen Greiner builds the iRobot
  • In 2011, Jake Tyler develops the world’s first cardboard vacuum cleaner
  • Waller Griffiths invented the first portable vacuum cleaner
  • There were 27 different developments of the Vacuum Cleaner

Design Challenge

  • I had to make the size small for it to be portable easily
  • I had to make the motor powerful, or else it wouldn't be that useful, and I had to poke holes in the fan chamber for airflow
  • I had to make it have an eraser and a pencil sharpener together because if someone needed to erase something, then they would need my machine and also to clean the mess

Design Advantage

  • Instead of Booth’s idea, I created something much smaller than his, which could make it much more efficient to carry around.
  • Also, he used an internal engine, but I used a single three-voltage battery to fit with its miniature size.
  • On his vacuum cleaner, he had to use wheels for it to be carried, but mine could
  • just be carried by hand
  • It could also be taken to other locations very easily
  • Booth’s vacuum cleaner was very noisy, which had people complain, but mine doesn’t produce a lot of sound
  • Although his Trolley Vacuum was smaller, it had to be pushed by a person to vacuum, but my vacuum only needed a button to be pressed
  • Reduces weight in backpacks
  • Reduces material usage in production – better for the environment

How I Made My First MHB

Materials:

  • Mouthwash cup
  • Mini motor
  • Hot glue gun
  • Piece of plastic/thin metal - to make a fan
  • Switch
  • Battery holder
  • Wires
  • Battery
  • Pencil sharpener
  • Eraser
  • Aspirin cup
  • Net
  • Straw

Steps:

  1. Get a mouthwash cap and build a mini fan that could fit in it with any thin metal or plastic.
  2. Get an aspirin cup as a container for the crumbs.
  3. Put a net between the container and the motor container so the motor won’t clog.
  4. Cut a hole in the container for a straw to suck the crumbs
  5. Put the batteries in the battery holder on the right side of the vacuum cleaner
  6. Put the switch on the side of the vacuum
  7. Tape the pencil sharpener on the side of the vacuum
  8. Tape an eraser on the bottom of the vacuum
